10 top tips for offering solids

1) Offer solids after you have given baby their milk feed.

  • Milk is the most important form of nutrition at this stage for your little one.
  • You will notice more interest and acceptance from your baby if they are not hungry or thirsty. Remember; they don’t realise this solid, foreign ‘muck’, you are putting into his/her mouth is going to stop their tummy rumbling! This is a learnt skill.

2)  Always offer solids mid morning:

  • Hopefully this WONT happen but if your baby does have an allergic reaction he/she will have it when awake!
  • Your baby will be more accepting when he is well rested and not grumpy and we all know he/she can be terribly grumpy in the afternoons!

3) Try offering food immediately after milk feed or not too long after:

  • Think about it; if you wait too long after you have finished dinner you are less likely to eat that chocolate pudding that was on offer.
  • Do you really want to be feeding your baby all day long? You want to put aside some time for taking care of YOU.Remember: soon he/she will be eating breakfast lunch and dinner.
  • Do you want your baby to eat well when he/she is a toddler? Start healthy eating habits from the very beginning. What you teach him/her now is what he/she will know in the future.

5) Offer small amounts. Your baby’s tiny tummy has to get used to feeling full and digesting all of this new stuff! Every few days increase amount just a little.

6) Expect to feel frustrated and perhaps a little dejected when your little treasure spits your lovingly prepared creation right back at you. This is highly probable at the start and when offering any new foods. It doesn’t mean he/she doesn’t like your cooking it is just what babies do!! Your baby will eventually adore all of your cooking skills. Perseverance and lots of patience is the key.

7) Once a day is enough when you both first start this experiment.

8 ) Follow development regarding how to offer solid foods. Baby development in relation to food will go something like this:

  • Stage 1: First tastes- smooth foods, around 6 to 7 months.
  • Stage 2: Learning to chew-soft lumps, around 7 to 8 months.
  • Stage 3: Self feeding- finger foods, fork mashed, 9 to 12 months
  • Stage 4:  This is the easy stage, whatever you guys are eating. Perhaps with a few little changes. Particularly if you love a good spicy curry!

9) Advice is always just a guide. We as mothers are very good at comparing our little champion with all the other little champions. We also strongly feel the need to constantly get things RIGHT or the way ‘the book’ say’s it should be. Remember; ALL babies are different. They all learn to eat in their own time. Baby time!!

10) RELAX and HAVE FUN! Trust your baby; he will learn to eat when he is ready. Remember to be kind to yourself. You will not always get it PERFECT.
